According to research conducted by the American Cancer Society, over 30,000 individuals receive oral cancer diagnoses each year. Tragically, the mortality rate for oral cancer patients surpasses 7,000 cases annually. Nonetheless, early-stage detection significantly increases the likelihood of successful treatment and management through routine annual examinations.

The pathologic advancement of oral cancer initiates with an asymptomatic stage, often lacking evident signs of typical cancer symptoms. Therefore, the oral cancer examination conducted by dentists holds immense importance. Histologically, oral cancers manifest in various forms such as teratoma, melanoma, and adenocarcinoma. Among these, squamous cell carcinoma stands as the most prevalent type of oral cancer, usually originating in the tissues of the lip and mouth.

Oral cancer frequently manifests in the oral cavity and maxillofacial regions, encompassing areas such as the mouth, lips, tongue, salivary glands, gums, throat, and face.

Why should I receive an oral cancer examinations?

Nearly 75 percent of oral cancers are linked to modifiable habits like tobacco use, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption. Consulting your dentist can offer valuable guidance on lifestyle modifications and methods to quit smoking.

Early detection significantly improves the effectiveness of oral cancer treatment. Any observable abnormalities in the gums, mouth, tongue, or surrounding areas should be promptly evaluated by a healthcare professional. During examinations, dentists and dental hygienists meticulously assess for any pathological changes in the maxillofacial and oral regions to ensure comprehensive evaluation and early detection.

 Oral cancer routine examination process:

Pink or white patches and persistent sores that do not heal or easily bleed can indicate pathological (potentially cancerous) changes. These patches are commonly observed on the front and sides of the tongue, as well as on the bottom of the mouth.

Leukoplakia: refers to a firm, gray, or white lesion that can develop anywhere in the mouth. If left untreated, leukoplakia can potentially lead to cancer. Therefore, timely treatment is essential to prevent further complications.

Lumps: Pathological complications often manifest as lumps, swellings, or the general hardening of tissue in the throat or mouth.

Oral cancer examinations, diagnosis and treatment:

The oral cancer assessment process is entirely painless. During the visual examination, the dentist checks for abnormalities and feels the glands, face, and neck for any unusual lumps. Additionally, a remarkable device used in oral cancer exams is the laser, which illuminates pathological changes and identifies irregular signs and lesions that might otherwise remain undetectable.

Upon detecting irregularities, lesions, leukoplakia, or lumps, your dentist will meticulously propose a diagnostic impression and a treatment plan. If the initial treatment plan proves ineffective, the next crucial step involves conducting a biopsy. A clinical assessment via biopsy is pivotal in determining the precise stage and grade of the oral lesion.

The breakdown of the basement membrane of the epithelium is a significant indicator of oral cancer. Moreover, the rapid spread of various cancer forms to other regions within the oral and maxillofacial areas poses additional risks. Treatment strategies vary depending on the specific diagnosis but may include interventions such as chemotherapy, excision, and radiation therapy.

While dentists and hygienists routinely monitor your mouth for changes and lesions during regular check-ups, it's advisable to undergo a comprehensive oral cancer screening at least once a year.
