Southern California Family Dentistry - Dental Sealants

The molars and premolars possess pits, fissures, and deep grooves that often require a protective coating known as a sealant. These areas can be prone to dental decay as they are challenging to clean thoroughly. When left untreated, these conditions make the teeth vulnerable to decay. The sealant acts as a shield by bonding into these grooves and depressions, providing a protective barrier. It effectively safeguards the tooth, seals deep grooves, prevents decay, and creates a smoother surface. Typically, sealants can endure for up to 10 years. However, it's essential to have them regularly examined during dental check-ups to ensure they haven't worn off or chipped.

Who needs sealants?

Sealants are particularly recommended for children and teenagers who are at a higher risk of developing decay. They become especially necessary when the permanent back teeth, known as the six-year molars, erupt, or during the cavity-prone years ranging from 6 to 16 years old.

Absolutely! Even adults without any existing tooth decay can benefit from sealants, especially if they have deep grooves or depressions in their teeth. Sealants provide an added layer of protection against potential decay in these vulnerable areas, contributing to better overall dental health.

Sealants are sometimes necessary for baby teeth when a child is prone to cavities or if the teeth have deep grooves or depressions.

What do sealants involve?

Applying sealants is a swift and painless procedure. It typically takes only a few minutes per tooth and can be easily administered by your dentist or dental hygienist.

Initially, the teeth undergo a meticulous cleaning and are kept dry using absorbent materials. Subsequently, an acid solution is applied to the enamel surface, enabling the sealant to bond effectively with the teeth. Once the treated teeth are rinsed and dried, the sealant material is carefully brushed onto the deep grooves and depressions of the enamel. The curing process of the sealant, whether it hardens immediately or requires a special curing light, depends on the type of sealant utilized during the procedure.

Taking appropriate precautions, attending consistent dental check-ups, and adopting a nutritious diet will help in preserving the effectiveness of your newly applied sealants.
